Welcome! My name is George Peter and I have been teaching medical/surgical and mental health nursing at Broward Community College for seven years. Course Description
Health Alterations II is designed to provide the student with the knowledge of the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems of the adult client who has alterations in neuromuscular regulation.
The student is expected to understand utilization of the nursing process in providing care to the client with neurologic and musculoskeletal problems as well as the client with actual or potential impairment of neuromuscular integrity.
The major focus is directed at meeting the health care needs of the adult through utilization of the nursing process. The student will be expected to integrate principles of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems in this course.
This course is designed to be straight forward and to the point. Textbook and reading assignments are necessary. Online and text book quizzes are available to test your knowledge of the content that you have read. Additionally, there are some web sites that you can use to enhance your clinical and theoretical knowledge. This is a three credit hour course that normally would meet twice per week for 3 hours/day over 8 weeks. Since this is an online course you are expected to put in an equivalent amount of time in order to be successful in this course.
Learning Outcomes
1. The student should be able to utilize the theoretical concepts regarding structural, traumatic, degenerative disorders of the sensory system.2. The student should be able to utilize the theoretical concepts regarding structural, traumatic, degenerative disorders of the neurologic system.3. The student should be able to utilize the theoretical concepts regarding structural, traumatic, degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system.4. The student should be able to utilize the theoretical concepts regarding structural, traumatic, degenerative disorders of the integumentary system.
Methods of Instruction
This course is comprised of 4 Learning Units:
Unit 1 – The Sensory System
Unit 2 - The Neuromuscular System
Unit 3 - The Musculoskeletal System.
Unit 4- Integumentary system
There will be four examinations based on each Learning Unit.
The dates and times are:
Exam 1: Sunday, Mar 22 2009, starting at 2.30 PM and ending at 4.00 PM
Exam 2: Sunday, Apr 5 2009, starting at 2.30PM and ending at 4.00 PM
Exam 3: Sunday, April 19 2009, starting at 2.30 PM and ending at 4.00 PM
Exam 4: Sunday, May 5 2009, starting at 2.30 PM and ending at 4:30 PM
*** Examinations take place in Building 17, room 220 on Central Campus
The passing grade for this course is "C" which is equal to 73% of your total score. Grading will be based on four multiple-choice exams (see daily schedule for specific date and time) Examinations are based on the objectives in the Module, web discussion web sites, and textbook information. All exams are mandatory. Make-up exams will only be given in the event of an emergency or illness.

Mandatory Clinical Hours
In order to meet mandatory clinical hours of 112 for the term you will be required to attend clinical for two days in the first two weeks in this Term. The first two mandatory clinical days in campus will be held on (3/11/09) & (3/17/09) from 8.30 AM to 5.00 PM at Room 213 in building 8. We will go over the clinical policies, math test, Fluid and electrolytes and Neurological assessment. Please plan accordingly.
